With a depth of 600 meters, the lava lake on Mount Nyiragongo once had the largest volume in the world, however its depth changes now. Nyiragongo is surrounded by hundreds of tiny volcanic cinder cones from flank eruptions. Lava from Mount Nyiragongo flows at a pace of 100 km/h during an eruption. Human life is in jeopardy because of the swift lava flow, which reaches people before they can escape when the volcano erupts.
